Borrowing

The Public Central Library of Rethymno is a lending institution. It has a rich collection of printed and audio-visual material which is available to the reading public. The management and borrowing of this material is done with the integrated Koha library system, based on open source software. Only registered members of the Library have the right to borrow. Anyone can become a member of the lending department without any financial burden. Each member can borrow up to two books at a time for twenty days. The time can be extended if the book has not been requested by another reader.

Borrowers must return the books within the deadline set and in the condition in which they were received. Destruction or loss of a book entails the mandatory and immediate replacement of it by the borrower.
Excluded:
The information material ie: encyclopedias, dictionaries, guides, maps, aids and multi-volume works.
• Rare books, old editions and those that are no longer on sale.
• Magazines, newspapers.
• Material older than 20 years.
• Newspapers and magazines.
• Archive material.

Non-borrowed material may be used by anyone, whether a member or not, in the reading room.
Also from the non-rare material it is possible for those interested to take photocopies of the texts that interest them.
17,000 members are registered in our Library. Each member has the possibility to request that an item that is already borrowed be reserved. The lending service notifies the person concerned as soon as it is returned to come to the Library to pick it up.

With the automated loan system of the Koha library program, we are given the opportunity to know:
• If the book we are looking for is borrowed.
• Who has borrowed it.
• When it will be returned.
• How many books each member has borrowed.
• How many and which books have been returned late.
• Statistics, which include data from the activity of the lending department and reflect the image of the Library.
